Anthony Newell

Senior iOS Engineer · Engineering Manager

I have been building native iOS since 2012 and shipping software since 1997. I have led teams of seven, taken apps from an empty Xcode project to the App Store, and spent years on the systems underneath: logistics platforms, ERP, search, and integrations.

Selected work

My Disney Experience

2014 – 2016
iOS Tech Lead, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts
  • Owned the app through five releases over a year and a half, leading a team of seven on a product used by millions of park guests.
  • Drove the crash rate from 6% to 0.4% and lifted the App Store rating from 3 to 4.5 stars.
  • Built the GIS, mapping, and routing that guided guests to attractions, plus geofencing that changed app context at resort properties.
  • Set up the studio's Jenkins CI and established the agile process and release cadence the broader mobile team adopted.

Doctor on Demand

2019 – 2021
Software Engineering Manager · Mobile Sustaining Engineer
  • Led a team of seven embedding live doctor video calls into native mobile SDKs that ran inside partner applications.
  • Rewrote the core networking layer of the iOS and Android apps onto a new backend API without breaking the release cadence.
  • Designed and implemented Mobile Single Sign-On across both native apps, and cut the crash rate by 10% through sustained triage.
  • Prototyped a shared Kotlin Multiplatform API layer and proved it worked, though the team chose not to adopt Kotlin at the time.

ShareBuilder / Capital One

2012 – 2013
Lead iOS Consultant, via Ratio Interactive
  • Lead iOS consultant on an investing app with roughly seventy people involved over eighteen months.
  • Delivered the encryption, secure storage, and app signing work required to pass compliance review, and resolved crashing and memory issues.
  • After release, re-architected the app into a framework Capital One reused across other lines of business.

Day to Day Match 3

2026
Sole engineer and designer · Read the case study
  • Wrote a real-time generative music engine in pure C inside an AVAudioSourceNode render callback: zero allocations, zero locks, zero Objective-C message sends on the audio thread, driving 36 concurrent synthesis voices.
  • Built a configuration layer that produces four visually and sonically distinct products from one binary and one set of JSON files, with language, palette, board geometry, music and pacing all resolved as data.
  • Designed for players whose ability is declining, so difficulty steps down rather than up, and the accessibility modes are the same skin machinery the four products are built from.

KIN Resonance Lab

2026
Lead Developer, KIN LLC · On the App Store
  • Took a real-time audio app from idea to the App Store in Swift and SwiftUI on an MVVM structure.
  • Built the audio pipeline on AVFoundation and AVAudioEngine: an instrument tuner with selectable 432 and 440 Hz reference pitch, a voice analyzer reading vocal fundamental frequency with live harmonic readout, a self-tuning drone generator, and a tap-tempo rhythm trainer on a shared timing engine.
  • Designed and shipped monthly, annual, and lifetime subscription tiers through App Store review.

OfferUp

2012
Lead iOS Engineer, contract
  • Ground-up rewrite launching version 2 of the iOS app, as it became a mobile marketplace.
  • Built a custom image list component, inspired by Pinterest, driven from a server API with asynchronous image loading.

Independent studio, 2008 – 2016

I ran Wopple Topple LLC on evenings and weekends and shipped more than a dozen iOS and Android titles, working directly with artists, authors, and publishers. Four of them were built with award-winning artist Ciro Marchetti. It is where I learned that architecting an app and actually getting it through the store are two different skills.

Walkthrough of Legacy of the Divine Tarot, my first App Store release, built with artist Ciro Marchetti and shipped in June 2010. Recorded at the time. Ten minutes, and a fair look at how much app was in it.

Before mobile

OMAX Corporation

2005 – 2012
Manager of Information Technology
  • Senior IT leader at a $70M waterjet manufacturer, reporting to the COO, managing six staff and presenting quarterly to the board.
  • Designed and built a custom web-based ERP in PHP, and a barcode-scanning parts kanban system integrated with the factory floor that cut inventory 15% and raised shop-floor efficiency 20%.
  • Wrote embedded controller programs in C++ over CAN bus, a SolidWorks integration that pulled bills of materials out of 3D model files, and a repeatable ETL process for system migrations.

TransGroup Worldwide Logistics

2001 – 2005
Senior Software Developer & Analyst
  • Delivered ten mission-critical systems for a freight forwarder running fifteen offices and two hundred concurrent daily users.
  • Built a freight quoting engine that compared roughly thirty carriers in a single quote, calling live USPS, FedEx, DHL, and trucking APIs and normalizing static rate tables into the same response shape as the live ones.
  • Modernized the platform onto SQL Server with offsite replication and failover, and wrote the integration layer feeding shipment and financial data into Microsoft Dynamics.

Earlier: ParaMatrix Solutions, where I led the rewrite of that logistics platform and a $6M student management system for the University of Washington; Eden Systems; SI Technologies, building route management software for the refuse industry integrated with onboard truck scales; and IBM, in field service for Boeing.

What I work in

iOS — Swift, SwiftUI, UIKit, Objective-C, MVVM, Core Data, AVFoundation, AVAudioEngine, XCTest, Instruments, App Store release

Platform — mobile SDK design and framework distribution, offline-first sync, REST and JSON, single sign-on, push notifications, GIS and geofencing

Delivery — Jenkins, Xcode Cloud, GitHub Actions, TestFlight, agile process design, code review, mentoring

Beyond mobile — Python, PHP, JavaScript, TypeScript, C++, SQL Server, Elasticsearch, AWS, ETL

AI — Claude Code in the daily loop, plus production Claude-based automation I built and run

What I am doing now

  • Habvia — fractional CTO of a Central American real estate marketplace, owning the technical roadmap and the platform architecture.
  • Day to Day Dementia — a membership platform for dementia caregivers that I built and run alone, on a custom Python publishing pipeline with Claude-based automation.
  • The Seven Stages of Dementia — a caregiver's guide I wrote and published in 2026, after six years caring for my wife through early onset Alzheimer's.
